How the reading speed test works
Reading speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). This test times how long you spend reading a short passage at your natural pace, then divides the word count by your time. A few comprehension questions follow — your score only counts if you actually understood what you read, so skimming won’t inflate the number.
What is a good reading speed?
The average adult reads around 250 WPM. Strong high-school and college readers land closer to 300–350 WPM, and trained speed readers comfortably read 400+ WPM with solid comprehension. On a timed test like the SAT, faster reading means more time to think through each question instead of racing the clock.
Can you improve your reading speed?
Yes. Most readers can add 100 or more WPM by training out subvocalization, widening their visual span, and practicing with pacing tools like RSVP (rapid serial visual presentation). ZapReading turns this into a daily habit with drills and real SAT-level passages so your speed gains stick where they matter.
